How Does Teeth Whitening Work in a Dental Office?

Team Teeth Whitening

There are several options for those looking for a brighter, whiter smile. However, the fastest and most effective way to whiten your teeth is with in-office teeth whitening. Teeth whitening in a dental office is safe, fast, and non-invasive. Here’s what to expect if you opt for professional teeth whitening at your dentist’s office.

In Office Teeth Whitening: What to Expect

Teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dental treatments performed in the U.S. This safe, effective cosmetic treatment offers patients a noticeably brighter smile within about an hour. The Zoom! treatment begins with protecting the soft tissues of the mouth from the whitening agent (a form of peroxide). Known as a retractor, this small, painless, plastic oral device keeps the lips and gums protected while holding the mouth open and exposing the teeth.

Next, a special coating will also be applied to the gums to protect them from the whitening agent. You will also wear specialized glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light used in Zoom! teeth whitening.

The whitening gel will then be applied to the teeth. The Zoom! Light is then positioned to shine on the teeth to activate the carbamide peroxide. The light will shine on the teeth for 15 minutes. The old gel will then be removed, and a new application of gel will be applied, and the light activation will begin again. You will go through the gel and light cycle three times in total.

Benefits of Teeth Whitening at a Dental Office

Zoom! teeth whitening penetrates both the dentin and enamel of the teeth without damaging the teeth. By using the light to activate the carbamide peroxide, oxygen is able to break up even stubborn stains on the teeth resulting in teeth that may be up to 8 shades whiter.

In-office teeth whitening offers several benefits when compared to over-the-counter products.

  • Professional grade whitening gel contains higher concentrations of the active whitening agent
  • Experienced dental staff ensure your lips and gums are thoroughly protected to reduce sensitivity
  • In-office teeth whitening provides results in about one hour, compared to over-the-counter or take-home products, which may take weeks for full results
  • In-office teeth whitening results tend to last longer than at-home whitening products
  • An affordable way to upgrade your smile
  • Safe for teeth
  • Adjustable intensity settings for enhanced patient comfort

In-office teeth whitening is a great way to put your best face forward safely and effectively. For patient safety, a comprehensive dental exam is required to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy. Though not required, a professional cleaning before whitening your teeth is recommended.
